The Art of Signing
American Sign Language Instruction through Artistic Movement
Through stories, songs, and poems, children learn Sign Language and develop their understanding of concepts of the story in a multisensory approach. Children practice their receptive and expressive language skills and increase their understanding and use of non-verbal communication while experiencing the fun of books, stories, and reading. Classes are for 3 year olds and above.
Classes can be offered as a one-time entertainment, or as an on-going program in Language. All-aged children will benefit and enjoy these classes, such as Home Schoolers who want to learn another language, after-school club students, preschoolers, or summer campers. Lessons are organized in units of 4 classes each. Ideally, a twelve-week program will give a good beginning foundation for communicating in the language, but a shorter program will offer exposure and awareness.
Students will:
- tell stories, sing songs and recite poetry in ASL
- acquire vocabulary and learn grammar of ASL in fun and engaging activities
- learn about Deaf Culture
- practice Non-verbal Communication skills: Body Language and Facial Expression
- learn the Manual Alphabet
Why Should Hearing Children Learn to Sign?
When children use signs to enhance the characters and ideas in
a story, they
- Have a higher level of interest
- Understand story concepts easier
- Develop creativity and dramatic non-verbal expression
- Experience the concepts through many modalities:
- visually
- aurally
- kinesthetically
- and physically
- Experience the joy of reading and books!
- Have FUN!

Special Classes
Special classes are also offered for parents and their children with Language Delays: Autism, Deafness, ESOL, or Developmental Delays. These classes have the focus for true communication needs, and are tailored to fit the family/student involved, but the lessons are also formatted in a fun and appropriate way: music, stories, and realistic play and life experiences.
